Understanding Fair Housing for Homeless Service Providers

Description
This course includes the following five videos:

Understanding the Eviction Process
This video will help you recognize court documents and timelines and increase your skill in locating tenant resources. It is designed to give you a basic understanding of the court process and tenant defenses to evictions.

Fair Housing for Homeless Service Providers
In this video, you will learn about the board implications of housing discrimination, a brief overview of federal, state, and local fair housing laws, and case examples and trends impacting protected classes.

Fair Housing Hot Topics: Common Barriers Experienced by Persons Experiencing Homelessness
This video will review current topics in fair housing that impact people experiencing homelessness. Topics include criminal background and other screening, domestic violence, assistance animals, gender protections, source of income protections, and the rights of persons with disabilities, including mental health and those with a history of substance abuse.

Little Things Shouldn’t Matter: Fair Housing & Familial Status Discrimination
Families with children were protected under fair housing laws in 1988. Yet, fair housing violations continue to occur in a variety of formats, including outright denials, restrictive occupancy standards, rules or policies targeting children, and bias in advertising, among others. In this workshop, hear about cases challenging fair housing violations and best practices to ensure housing is open to qualified families with children.

Landlord and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities
In Michigan, the law sets forth the rights and duties of landlords and tenants. We will discuss entering into a lease agreement, the duty to pay monthly rent, the duty to keep the property habitable and in good repair, eviction proceedings, and the security deposit process.
