Understanding Evictions in Michigan: the Data, Causes and Responses
University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions published the first comprehensive report on evictions in Michigan in June 2020. The report included recommendations for reforms aimed at reducing the number of eviction filings, creating a fairer and more just eviction process, and reducing the harm of eviction filings. An updated report, including revised recommendations, was published in June 2021. This report takes stock of Michigan evictions as the pandemic has threatened an unprecedented wave of evictions which several policy and programmatic changes have suppressed. You will learn why social science research has found evictions to be a cause of and not only a symptom of poverty, what research shows about the locations and prevalence of evictions in Michigan and a summary of federal and state policy responses to manage eviction risk during the pandemic.

Fair Housing for Homeless Service Providers
Presentation by Liz Keegan from Fair Housing Center of West Michigan presents on Fair Housing. You will learn about the broad implications of housing discrimination as well as:
• A brief overview of federal, state, and local fair housing laws;
• New and proposed fair housing protections;
• Data on the current state of fair housing; and
• Case examples and trends impacting protected classes.

Landlord and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities In Michigan
The law sets forth the rights and duties of landlords and tenants. We will discuss entering into a lease agreement, the duty to pay monthly rent, the duty to keep the property habitable and in good repair, eviction proceedings, and the security deposit process.
